Bringing together young musicians from all over Cambridge, Engage the event will take place on Saturday 21st March at St Barnabas Church. The programme will feature specialist instrument workshops, input and inspiration for worship leaders, and of course lots and lots of top notch music! Sam and Sara Hargreaves head up EngageWorship.org, working at a local and national level to encourage young people to explore culturally relevant ways to express praise to God. Recent weeks have seen sessions on 'How can I make the most of my life?' and 'How can I be sure of my faith' with an irresistable atmosphere filling the venue as young people get the chance to explore the Christian faith. Our recent Away Day brought 85 young people together for a programme of teaching on the Holy Spirit, and 2 young people made commitments to follow Jesus for the first time. This is such an exciting project to be involved in, we're humbled every week as we see the interest and enthusiasm of young people. In Hope Revolution, more than 100 people joined forces for social action and outreach projects, demonstrating the love of God in the community in Kings Hedges, Barnwell and Cherry Hinton.

Teams of delegates were placed in local churches who linked them up with painting, gardening and cleaning projects in their area. One of the Barnwell residents was so impressed with the work done by their team of teenage gardeners, they tried to pay them for the job!

Cherry Hinton Baptist Church hosted a youth café for the second year running, and it’s great to see the work having a lasting impact. 2 girls we met last year are now regulars at church, and one young lad has just started playing drums at the service! As we left the site on Sunday, one 13 year old even promised to join the mission team next year!

We’re already planning for next Summer. Our goal is to see more young people having a fantastic experience of serving their community and sharing their faith in Jesus. It's a real experience of 'joined up' work as in almost every class we see familiar faces from youth events, and at break and lunchtimes others come up who recognise us from our church links.

In every available moment we were chatting to one of the young lads who attended our Go East youth cafe and events last summer.

Steve Creamer is assisting teachers with young people of special educational or behavioural needs every Monday. One of the kids saw him the next day and shouted 'you're a good singer', which made a nice change!

SOURCE Termly

Three times a year, we organise a gathering for fulltimers for discussion, prayer and encouragement. The January meet at Comberton Baptist Church saw us joined by one of the Romsey Mill team for the first time. Jim did a short introduction on how to evaluate our ministry, and then we spent time discussing 11-14's ministry and the place for working together. Amid the doughnuts and bacon butties, there was some good stuff going on, and several have been in touch since saying how much they appreciated the time together.

Cambridge United Tours

20 young people from Lode Chapel joined the first Cambridge United Tour of 2008. Chris is co-ordinating the project this year as our links with the club continue to grow. The February tour will include an entire team of lads from Great Wilbraham who will also see some involvement on the pitch during the match day formalities!

Give Yourself A Break

We've been touring various youth groups over recent weeks, teaching on 'How to be a star' taking our text from Philippians 2:14-16. Visiting All Saints Milton, Royston, Queen Edith Chapel, Waterbeach Baptist, St Barnabas among others, we've used the opportunity to promote what's happening under Hope Revolution in 2008. It's alwasy great to get out and meet young people and see the wonderful and faithful work being done by volunteers all over the place. Our message has been aimed at encouraging Christian young people to 'shine line stars in the universe' by quitting the moan culture, aiming for purity and holding out the word of life, confidently commending the gospel to others.

XCellr8 2008

Scripture Union's popular weekend residential for 8-11 year olds not only featured our very own Chris Lewney on the leadership team, but also a YFC Roadshow on the saturday night. Some of our favourite games, including 'Brain of a Vegetable', and 'Celebrity 2 Word Tango' made a welcome return, and Jim presented a mini talk about being 'the light of the world'. The evening closed with one of the leaders being gunged by popular demand!

Hope Revolution Schools Challenge

We were really encouraged to see 20 young people turn up for the training event on Feb 3rd, representing 7 local schools and colleges between them. If you haven't caught up yet, Schools Challenge is one of 2 main thrusts of Hope Revolution in Cambridge & District. Young people are challenged to simply do something positive to bless their school during the month of April. Our launch event on March 14th will help in the build up, and after the projects have taken place will be hosting a party on May 9th.

The idea is that the whole thing becomes a crescendo of love in action all over the city as Christians live out their faith. We're also hoping that it wont be a one-off event, but will be a catalyst to see young people living confidently for Jesus in their schools.

Hills Road Outreach

Jim delivered a talk about 'The God Delusion' in the sixth form college last week, and for the next 5 Thursdays will be leading further discussion for those who want to know more. Based on the Christianity Explored course, please pray that many will come with open minds and that he will have the skill, the creativity and humility to answer questions and gently lead people to Jesus.

Thanks for all your support. Stick with us! God is amazing!!

Jim

Hope Revolution Launch

Saturday the 19th of January saw us launch the Hope Revolution here in Cambridge. It was a fantastic night of worship and fellowship in which we were able to convey the message and heart behind the Hope Revolution campaign. Guest Band (Broken Hero) created a real buzz throughout the worship time which was further enhanced by a passionate and direct message from Dan Dowman.

Hopefully the success of this event is a sign of things to come.

Directors Update - January

Heres the word on the latest happenings at YFC HQ.

Hope Is Here!
2008 sees the launch of Hope Revolution, the youth movement which is part of the Hope initiative. At YFC we're trying to co-ordinate the whole thing, and have put together a core team of youth workers from:

St Barnabas
St Andrews Street Baptist
Cambridge Community Church
Urban Saints
St Matthews Church

There are two main 'prongs' to the Hope Revolution Programme:

Hope Revolution Schools Challenge
In every secindary school we're encouraging the Christians to work together, through the vehicle of their CU group to do something to bring Hope to their school. This could be anything in the form of a Random Act of Kindness such as 'appreciate your caretaker day', wash the staff cars during lunch break, clear out the store cupboard etc. In the process they'll take an assembly to tell the school what they're doing, and make a video while they're doing it.

Schools Challenge projects are planned to take place in April 08 with a Launch event on March 14th and a report back event on May 9th, which will be hosted by FLAME the termly youth event run in partnership with c3.

Hope Revolution Summer
Following on from Go East, this summers mission week will be bigger than ever. We're joining forces with Summer Blast, the establish week of community action in Kings Hedges run by City Life church, with the aim that together there will be three localised areas of activitiy, with us heading up programmes in Cherry Hinton and Barnwell.

There is the potential for us to join forces to meet for training, and for worship, giving everyone a sense of being part of something big. Local churches in each area will help to shape the kind of activities we undertake, but we're hoping to lay on a youth cafe, some community action projects and some evening events to show the incredible, contagious love of God in word and deed!

The summer mission will run from July 27th til August 4th. And Steve Lown has designed a funky flyer which is currently at the printers!

Schools Latest
Chris Lewney made his first visit to Netherhall School CU, supporting the teacher there who runs the group, re-establishing the link made by Tom last year. He'll be going along regularly which means that between them, our yfcone volunteers support 3 CU's every week.

We're also developing a link with New Generation who are an international agency, based in Scandinavia, providing support for and raising the profile of student CU groups in secondary schools. We're going spend an afternoon in their UK base next month, and then they'll be sending their concert team to Cambridge for a day in March, doing a lunchtime performance in school and an evening event in a local church.... watch this space for details!

A Knights Ball
General Opinion was that the 2007 Ball was our best yet. A particular hit with our guests was The Medieval Tournament Arena where a jousting arena sat alongside archery, and traditional cards and dice games amused the watching peasants!

Other venues included The Tavern with themed cocktails and acoustic live music, The Great hall with DJ, bouncy castle and chocolate fountain, and The Dungeon with spooky noises, buffet meal and big screen video games.

Thankfully we paid all the bills and had a few pennies to spare - 99 tickets were sold and many decided to get into the medieval vibe with costumes galore. We even pulled off 10 minutes of English Country Dancing in the dance floor with everyone joining in.

The event was planned and delivered with the help of Dan Dowman, youth worker at St A's, and served to show the dedication and creativity of the YFC team, with Becca, Chris, Steve and Hannah handling their own venues.

Carols At The Abbey
Stuart and Jim hosted the annual Cambridge Utd Carol Service at Monday 17th December on another chilly night! This year the star guests were the school choir from Abbey Meadows Primary school - when the Salvation Army Band joined in with 'It was on a starry night' -totally unrehearsed - it was a real goosebumps moment!

Around 250 people came through the turnstiles and made a good noise, and we also welcomed the Black Thunders from Q103, who sent some a live report back to the studio. A retiring collection of £180 was given to their Q103 kids charity.

Graham Daniels spoke briefly with his typical wit and wisdom which made the event another fantastic gospel event with a real feel of community. Roll on next year!

SOURCE on Saturday
The youth workers breakfast event is now 3 months into its new run at St Philips Church. Each session includes plenty of time to chat over bagels or pastries, giving local volunteers the chance to meet each other and share concerns. We give a 15 minute intro to the topic of the day and give everyone a chance to discuss and pray in groups, applying it to their own situation. The morning wraps up with a chance to share events and news, with the added bonus of a freebie to take away.

At the January sourse we were able to give out taster packs from YFC's new resource The CRUX. The CRUX, like Rock Solid and Mettle is a continuously updated programe of session outlines, this one intended for use in schools. Churches and YFC centres are being encouraged to engage with the governments new initiative to develop extended schools. That means more after school clubs, creative and stimulating activities being offer after hours, which means more involvement from the voluntary sector - and that includes us. Please pray that we can make the most of this opportunity in Cambridge.

CUFC Tours
We continue to offer our unique tour package three times a year, which is a fun and evangelistic opportunity for church youth groups. I'm delighted to say that we're fully booked for 2008 - although we could squeeze a small group in to the January tour.

This year we're expecting visits from Lode Chapel, Bury St Edmunds, WCCYM churches (West Cambridge villages) and Great Wilbraham. Thanks to Stuart for making this possible!

Shareholders Thanks!
We were really encouraged by the attendance and enthusiasm at our Annual Dinner and AGM back on December 1st. It felt like the first time we've really been able to see just who and how many are getting behind the mission. Sometimes you need to stop and look at what God has done, and by preparing to present the vision and work on the night even we were impressed!

Please keep on gossiping about YFC to everyone you know. Don't forget that the next event, on Saturday April 19th, is coming up fast!

Royston Link
Through the Source Network event we met a lovely couple from Royston who run a small youth group in their house. They were after some support is putting on a Carol service for the community, so I went along on December 9th (the same weekend we were moving house) and managed to rope in another guitarist from S Barnabas.

It was a very impressive effort as all the users of their local community centre took part, singing, dancing and reading. The young people they worked with performed some songs with a more contemporary edge - it was encouraging to see such a genuine long term relational work with young people from no church background. We'll be visiting again this term to spend a friday night with the group.

This is just one example of how the links and roots of YFC grow gradually through time and opportunity, under the grace of God. Keep praying!

YFC Staff Conference

Every year YFC have a staff conference in Wales. It's a time of spiritual growth and refreshment, relaxing and meeting up with new people and old friends.

This year the team had a great time. We were blessed with sound bible teaching from the Sri Lanka's experienced National YFC director. It was also very inspiring hearing what God has been doing and begun to do throughtout the country. There were also many big celebrations (worship and teaching sessions) and seminars throughtout the day, making it a spirituallly rewarding week.

As well as all that there was the games room (snooker, table-tennis etc), cafe and bar, swimming pool with steam room and sauna and chances to play a bit of football for those who fancied it. So there was always something to do.

It was an extreamly enjoyable week, and those of us that went came back refreshed, inspired and geared up for this Hope 08 year.

Hope Revolution Zero

If you're finding out about it for the first time you missed a great
event!

If you're reading up with fond memories then we loved you being there.

With music from the mighty St Barnabas band and Decent Reason and words of wisdom from Mark Fuller. Through all kinds of means we aim to support and encourage everyone working with young people for the glory of Jesus through ideas, resources, training and relationships.

SOURCE monthly kicked off in November at St Philips church with yummy breakfast, a brief interactive sesh on 'spiritual survival on the frontline' and city news, bringing everyone up to date on events around the area.

Each month we aim to link leaders up with free resources and inspirational ideas. SOURCE will take place on the second Saturday of every month at St Philips Church, Mill Road. See you at the next one?

HISTON MENS EVENT

On 29th September, New Life Church presented a Men's Conference at Histon Football Club. Among the guest speakers was our own Jim Overton who helped the 50 or so chaps present to consider the changing youth culture under the title 'We were young once...'. Several people seemed to express appreciation afterwards, and he walked away with two bottles of locally brewed ale!

CHURCH PLACEMENTS

Becca and Chris have settled in brilliantly on their yfcone programme. They spend Monday to Wednesday based in the office and the rest of the week with New Life Church Histon and Christ The Redeemer respectively.

As well as helping to deliver their regular existing youth groups, Chris has helped to launch a new Sunday night teaching meeting at the church and they were bowled over when 16 young people turned up. Chris says 'They're a bit loud, but whenever we get to the important bit, they go weirdly quiet'. He's also a big part of their 'Sports Value' course on a Wednesday afternoon. This was something that Jim and Tom helped to set up last year, and has is now being run again with Alex Davies their youth & families worker, hoping to introduce some new young people gently to the gospel message.

Becca speaks very warmly about Sunday services at New Life and has adapted very well to her new church family. She's planning a new cell group for girls only, and there is already some excited banter about the prospect. Becca leads the younger group at the Friday night club, based at Histon Baptist Church which is seeing record numbers showing up.

SCHOOLS LATEST

Since September YFC have taken on the support of Cottenha village college Christian Union. A group of around 10 young people attend faithfully, and Becca has been leading sessions, alongside Hilary Cheng, local Methodist minister. Becca continues to support the new leaders of the group at Long Road Sixth Form College and his busy badgerin some of her contacts to come along and see the group grow.

We've also led sessions at Chesterton Community College C.U., which Chris is now hoping to support, and Impington Village College C.U. Ultimately we'd like to see a group in every secondary school, led by students and supported by us, alongside local youthworker and others representing the local church.

We assisted in delivering a reflection day at St Bede's interchurch school where each of us led four sessions with a group of around 15 year 9 pupils. It was incredible to see the team in action, thinking on their feet with limited resources.

A couple of weeks later we led two assemblies which covered the whole school. Afterwards one of the young people at the reflection day declared 'My Dad wants me to become more Christian. What should I do?'

Jim delievered a talk in Hills Road called 'Do we have to take our clothes off to have a good time?' About 60 people turned up and pelted the speaker with challenging questions! There will be another similar event next term which will be followed by a 5 week Christianity Explored Course in the college, led by Jim, with Dan Dowman from St Andrews Street Baptist.

New Arrivals

The office is bursting with activity. especially on a Monday when we're joined by Steve Creamer from Cambridge Community Church (C3). As part of his year out programme he's working with the team one day a week. Among other things he'll be using his graphic design skills and, we hope, conributing to some new sports initiatives later in the year.

Hannah Overton is our new Church Resource Worker, giving her time for free for two days a week. As well as co-ordinating SOURCE network, outlined above, she'll be helping to deliver 'Give Yourself A Break' a touring session for local youth groups, and 'Passion and Purity' a comprehensive programme on Sex and Relationships which will be launched in 2008.

MOTIV8 MADNESS!

30 young people aged 11-14 exhausted themselves at Scripture Union's Motiv8 weekend, based at St Andrews Street Baptist Church in October. In 2007's event, Jim joined the leadership tea for the first time, and Becca and Chris led small teaching groups for the weekend. Highlights included YFC's gunge the leader experience and 'Becca vs Chris' an ongoing challenge in the syle of 'Ant vs Dec'. It was a fantastic time of teaching, worship and fun! One of the questions on the feedback form asked 'Do you learn anything about being a Christian?'. Here's a selection of the answers.

"Don't be shy about your beliefs because Christianity is fun"
"Motiv8 is fun is great and not to be shy about being a Christian"

"Grace and perseverance - I love Motiv8"

ENGAGE - the new bible reading notes for 14+

The Good Book Company will soon be launching a new series of resources to help teenagers unlock the bible. Jim's just finished contributing a week's studies on Habakkuk. Watch out for the first editions hitting the shelves in 2008.

MORE YOUTH EVENTS

Around 70 young people came to hear Simon Guillbaud's challenge to live on the edge for Jesus. With worship led by Decent Reason, the event also included an aftershow cafe run by St Andrews Histon. With several young people asking for prayer after the event, it was another example of effective unity between churches in Histon and Milton.

YB4God's September event saw Jim lead worship with a new band of young people from St Barnabas. Dan Dowman spoke about Integrity, and many responded to the message as they were encouraged to embrace freedom from guilt in Jesus.

The guest speaker at November's FLAME was YFC's very own Kate John. The evening kicked off with top local band Broken Hero who blew the crowd away. Listen out for more from them! FLAME looks like being at the heart of the events programme for Hope 2008 as we look to see Christian young people getting together like never before, and getting a heart for mission.

STAY TUNED!

There's loads of stuff coming up, including the BALL, The Shareholder Dinner and AGM, plus the new year's eve event Hope Revolution Zero... so keep coming back for more..!

Welcome

Hi guys!

Welcome to my new blog.
